The Guardians Epilogue Death. There's just something about that word, isn't there? Something that sends shivers down your spine and makes you want to turn and run a mile, as though a word is something that you can escape from. But death isn't something to fear. I mean, when I was alive I was just as terrified of dying as the next person, but death isn't actually as bad as it's cracked up to be...I should know, I've been dead for almost a year. Now don't go getting any ideas; I'm not a ghost or a vampire or any of that rubbish. I'm a Guardian. That's what we call the newbies who didn't die all that long ago, like me. After one year of undeadness every Guardian has to make a choice about what career path they want to follow and then that's the job that they do for the rest of their un#life, which is literally forever because we don't die, so it's a pretty important decision. When it comes to decision day there are three categories that you can choose from, and of course, EVERY Guardian wants to become a Keeper. The Keepers are the big-shots around here; they're the ones in charge of protecting the human world. You don't get to be a Keeper unless you've got the full package - brains, physical and mental fitness, stealth and bravery. The reason that everybody wants to be a a Keeper is because you get to visit the human world, plus you're treated like royalty. If that kind of thing isn't for you, you have the chance to become an Intellect (the crazy-smart ones who take care of running this place which humans like to refer to as 'heaven' as well as educating us Guardians) or a Worker (this is the path that most Guardians end up following; Workers do almost everything else from building our houses to caring for our animals and our sick). Now here's the catch; you spend your entire first year of undeadness being taught about the different paths and being advised on which career is best for you to take. However, when it comes to making your choice, that's all down to you. And if you're refused access to the group that you choose (you have to take a test where they look into your brain or something equally as freaky and weird) then that's it. Yep. I don't mean that's it, you're dead. I mean, Guardians are already dead! But you can't choose another path and you have to spend what's left of your un#life mooching around doing nothing. Now this doesn't sound too awful, but if a Guardian isn't fulfilling his or her's purpose then they just....fade. Simple as that, until one day you're just, not there anymore. I remember leaning about this at school and since that day I've been scared as hell. So there's not a Guardian alive who doesn't know just how important it is that you choose the right path on decision day. And I have to make my choice tomorrow, courage, physical and mental fitness, stealth and
