The Boy with The Barbie Doll Don't judge a book by its cover. I realized what that saying meant when I met Damian in the third grade. It was in the middle of the year the teacher Mrs. Pruitt announced that we had a new student. Questions of course echoed through the room. "I wonder what his, or her name is." "Is it a boy, or a girl?"everyone including me was asking questions to each other hoping someone knew something about him or her. No one did. Minutes after hearing the news the teacher brought him in. He wore name brand clothes. "Kids this is Damian. You wanna say something Damian to the class?" Said the teacher. Damian just stood there. My eyes scanned his body his hair, his shirt his pants everything. When I saw what was in his hands a kid in the back of the room said "look everyone he has a Barbie!" The class laughed. I even laughed. Damian sat down without the teacher (who was grinning at the time gave him permission). "Okay class settle down." The teacher said. Everyone quieted down. She looked at Damian (the kid who we all thought was gay) "why do you have a Barbie?" Damian looked up at the teacher, and said "it's my sister's." "Why do you have it?" "I'm going to give it back to her." "Does she go to school here if she does I'll let you be excused to go, and give it to her." "No she's dead she died of cancer. When I die she's going to meet me at the gates of Heaven that's when I'll give it to her." Mrs.Pruitt had tears in her eyes at the time. Damian looked up at her, and said "she loved it so much I don't know how she would forget it especially since she went in a forever vacation." He sighed, and looked down at the doll "I bet she misses this doll as much as I miss her. Before she died I promised her that I would take care of it. So I've been giving it baths, combing its hair, and reading it stories." The teacher along with other kids including me sobbed. Years later Damian got killed in a car wreck. In my mind he didn't die he reunited with his sister. I placed the Barbie Doll in his coffin so he could give it to her.
