Strange Happenings - Chapter 20 The old patient rang his bedside emergency buzzer. Each buzzer was identifiable in the orderly's station. Because he was old, Darren relied on just one orderly coming to investigate. Adam Singleton had worked at the institution for almost 4 years. He knew the rules inside out. Never go alone at night. He knew the old patient though. He'd been there before Adam had started and he could handle him with one finger. "you make the tea Jim" he said to the other orderly as he made his way to the ward. Locking the ward door behind him as he entered, he casually looked at all the patient's beds as he took the long walk to the end of the ward. Everything was normal, all the patients were safely tucked in, cuffed up and fast asleep. So it seemed. Adam Singleton never knew what made the noise behind him. He had turned to investigate but never made the turn. His head exploded at the half turn stage. Blood splattered the wall and floor for the length of 4 beds. He died instantly. "you fucking idiot" screamed Darren when he saw how hard Charles had hit him with the iron bar. "he fucking had that coming" Charles screamed back. "he's had it in for me for the past 4 years!. It was payback". Darren was horrified at the sight but instinctively grabbed the orderly's keys from his belt. All three made their way back to the body in which the Prince was trapped. "everything alright?" the orderly shouted as he heard what he thought was Adam returning. He repeated the question before becoming concerned enough to investigate. It took three blows to down him but he was still alive. They tied him up with a couple of sheets from the ward and made their way to the main entrance. There was some activity but they negotiated the exit without to much difficulty. Charles carried the Prince's dead host over his shoulder with ease. It was 12.15 am. The old patient had taken Adam Singletons personal bunch of keys which contained a car alarm fob. He ran to the car park and pressed the fob until he identified the vehicle from the flashing indicators. They drove for nearly two hours with the dead body in the boot of the car. They were laughing with excitement at the nights events when they heard the 'BANG BANG BANG' coming from the boot. Darren pulled over immediately and all three of them remained deathly quiet. They jumped when they heard it again. They all stood there while Charles opened the boot with the iron bar in his hand. The body shook from head to foot as though it was alive and the old patient screamed at the sight. Darren told them to calm down and reassured them he was dead. They realised together that it was the prince trying to get out of the body. Darren looked around him. It was farmland all around. It was perfect. Darren, Charles and the old patient dug and ripped away soil, rocks and roots by hand until the hole was deep enough to secure the body. It was away from any area that may be used by a farmer for crops and deep enough for any lurching body not to succeed in escape. When it was buried, they spent nearly an hour covering the area with boulders and large tree stumps. It was secure and they were happy and confident that the prince was gone for good.
