Finnick Fanfic #22
Hundreds of children stand shaking in fear, many crying. We join the back of the long queue to get signed in. "Alright?" Finnick asks. I nod, trying to stay positive when in actual fact, I am petrified. Soon enough it is my turn to get logged in. I have always been scared of the needle, I cant believe myself. I could be chosen to fight to the death but instead, I'm scared of a needle. A dark-skinned woman in a white uniform looks up at me, "Next!" She calls. With one arm behind my back, I grip Finnick's hand and I stretch the other hand out in front of me. I jump as a small shock runs through my finger. The woman scans my fingerprint and looks up at me. "So, you're 14?" She asks, raising one perfectly plucked eyebrow. Like many other children in the district (including Finn) I have been forced to grow up, fend for myself. I nod "14." As he gets signed in, I slip into place next to the other 14 year old girls and he then joins the 14 year old boys, although he looks a lot older than most of them. Our escort Hailee, dressed in a shocking blue puffball dress with waves painted on her eyelids, steps up to the mic. "The time has come to select one courageous young man and woman..." Her slightly orange tinted curls bounce as she speaks. I look away as the video is rolling. I just want to run away... I bet the peacekeepers wouldn't be able to catch me. Hailee waddles up to the glass bowl and dips her long, blue nails into the mountain of paper slips. My heart thuds. "Erika Pepper!" Everybody turns to face a young girl with short brown hair, I recognise her from the herb stall at the market. She turns to run, but a peacekeeper stops her. Erika climbs up the steps onto the stage and looks out at us all. "Now for the boys." I have nothing to worry about now, I smile at Finn. Hailee pulls out a slip of paper. "Finnick Odair."
