fire extinguisher It was a late summer evening and the sun was just beginning to set. I think I was around 14 years old. Benny and I were hanging out with a few friends at the park right by his house. We were doing the same stuff we had been doing every day that week so we were all having trouble staying entertained. Benny pulled me aside from our other friends and made a suggestion that we get drunk. His neighbor who was a few grades above us had left over vodka from the night before that he said he would sell to us. We hid from our other friends and went to the bush where his neighbor said the booze was hidden. Sure enough there was a Gatorade bottle filled to the brim. Neither of had drank very many times before so we figured this would be enough to get our young bodies drunk to satisfaction. We told our friends we had to do something in the field for a minute, trying to be sneaky. They knew we were up to something though they just had no idea what. We didn’t really want them to know we were drinking because none of them had drank before and we didn’t want them to feel uncomfortable. We went into the field and hid behind a dirt hill that was left over from the hockey rink they had there in the winter or something of the sort. I took the first pull. I chugged it all the way down to the half way mark in one motion and did so without breathing. I didn’t want to taste the stuff. Benny thought I had it right drinking it all in one gulp and decided to do the same. When we were both finished we sat there for a minute. Neither of us felt anything. We stood up and still nothing. We decided to walk back to our friends, a little disappointed. Once we got to the end of the park we continued our conversation we were having with our friends. After talking for a while, maybe 2 or 3 minutes, Benny and i wobbled and stumbled at the exact time, looking at each other and laughing. The alcohol hit us a bit later than we expected. After the blow to the head we got our friends to go to the playground and play on the swings hiving a jolly drunk time. The others immediately realized we were intoxicated but to our surprise could care less. I got a phone call about ten minutes later from our friend Raffi, inviting me and Benny to come over to his house for a sleep over. He already had a couple people over there. He didn’t know we were drunk. Benny and I accepted and parted with the friends we were with and began to walk over. Raffi lived pretty close to the park, about 6 or 7 blocks. I told Benny we had to act sober because Raffi and the others didnt know we were drunk and he might not want us over if he found out we had been drinking. Benny agreed. We both drunkenly and happily wandered our way over to our friends house. Raffi was a large, heavy set, full blooded Italian. Like the kind of Italian who’s family ate pasta for dinner every night and spoke to each other in their native toung. It was always awesome hearing him yell passionately with his mother back and fourth in a different language from the bottom of the stairs to the top of the stairs. Raffis room was in the basement. When we got to his house we cheered and greeted our friends. They immediately could tell that we had been drinking. Raffi was a little upset but let us stay. We all sat on the couch and took turns playing Raffis xbox on his big screen tv. I bit of time had passed and I got bored of playing video games so I went into the laundry room and drunk dialed some girls. They were amused with my drunkenness so I stayed on the phone with them for a while. I think I may have sang them a song or two. While I was talking with them I was admiring the bright red fire extinguisher that sat in the room on the shelf. I picked it up and felt how heavy it was. I remember thinking about how in my entire 14 years of #life I had never seen one go off. I looked at it closely to see how it worked. There was a pin stuck in the handle to keep it from going off by accident. I pulled the pin out and played with it for a minute by myself. Then, while still on the phone with the girls, I walked from the laundry room back to raffis room and held the extinguisher cocked and ready to go in the door way. Everyone in the room looked at me and didnt say anything. Someone started to say my name as I pulled on the handle. I giant puff of white powder dispersed throughout the room. I was as shocked as the rest of the room at how low my impulse control was. Everyone began to choke on the air. When the cloud finally hit me I felt a burning sensation in my eyes and throat. Everyone held their breath and ran out of the house. Raffi grabbed the extinguisher with him as it was still shooting out the toxic substance. We got outside and finally could breathe the air again. Everyone started a mixture of laughing and yelling at me. I apologize and try to explain that I really wanted to know what would happen when I set it off. Most of our friends were amused except for Raffi and a kid that had asthma. Raffi went back down in the basement and opened all of the windows and we all waited outside for the room to air out while the kid with asthma called his mom to come bring him home.
trunk Writing practice 3 we were all around 13 years old and were playing basket ball in the neighbor kids drive way. The teams were two on two, my cousin akil and me, versus my cousin ryan and the neighbor kid josh. Akil and I were down by 1 point and the game was reaching an end. We had the ball. Akil went for a shot to finish the game and hit the rim, the ball bounced twice then barely missed the basket. Afterword josh got the rebound and took the ball back to the three point line, shooting, and winning them the game. In a minor fit of rage quickly brought on by the loss akil threw the basket ball at the two of them, hitting ryan in the head. Ryan was known through out the neighborhood for his major anger issues and the irrational things he would do when his mood swings were brought on. He went for a screw driver that was sitting next to the garage. Akil an I both took off down the alley knowing that in his blindness he could hit anyone. We quickly went to the family mini van that had a code you could type in to unlock the door. We unlocked the door, climbed into the trunk and hid under a picnic blanket. After a minute or so we could hear the front car door open. I motioned for akil to be quiet as we listened to see what would happen next. It turned out to be my grandparents. They were having a conversation about some politics related event that happened the day before. Or something. We heard the engine start. Me and akil looked at each other and and knew that we would both stay hidden in the trunk for the ride. Besides basketball was getting old we had been playing all day. We continued to listen to my grandparents insignificant conversation while we dwelled in the back of the car, giggling every couple minutes at our crafty antics, and Somehow they couldnt hear us. After about 15 minutes we arrived at the macys parking lot at the southdale mall. We sat and listened as our grandparents got out of the car and walked tword the macys entrance. After they were a safe distance away we climbed to the front seats and got out of the car. The alarm went off. We quickly went and hid behind a neighboring car and watched as my grandpa trailed behind his wife looking back at the van, and slowly clicking the alarm off button that was on the electrical car key remote. We laughed loudly finally able to let out our reaction to the situation without being heard. I told him we should go inside and follow them around and he agreed. After looking through the macys for a few minutes we couldn’t find them and decided to walk into the mall ourselves. At the worst we could take the bus back home if they left without us safely back in the trunk. Just as we turned the corner to enter the main plaza of the mall, we saw our grandparents talking to a clerk at the cell phone kiosk. It was spring and wasn’t quite t shirt weather and we were wearing our winter coats. We put our hoods up and walked past them to see if they would notice us. They didn’t. We did a loop around the plaza and walked past them again. They must have been too distracted. We got bored of trying to get noticed so we went up the escalator and hit up the Chinese fast food restaurant. We ordered and sat down and had a nice meal. Eating about half of our food before deciding we should make our way back to the car and finish in the trunk. We made our way back to the van in the macys parking lot, typed in the code on the side of the door, and climbed back into the trunk to eat our Chinese food. Again we were in trunk for about a minute before we heard the car remote unlock the door. They must have been at the far end of the parking lot because the button was pushed continually totaling about 15 times until they got into the car. They started the engine and we could hear my grandma comment on the aroma of Chinese food, we laughed silently as my grandpa explained how it must be from the Chinese food they had in the car a week ago. We sat silently finishing our meals in the trunk while we drove for ten minutes. Making a stop now at the linden hills bread shop, great harvest. They got out of the car. As our meals were finished, we waited about 30 seconds to get out of the car ourselves. Hoping for something funny to happen while we stalked our grandparents. We put our hoods up and sprinted past them into the store ourselves. We got some free samples of bread and sat down on the bench in the store with our hoods over our eyes eating our samples. Our grandparents entered the store and walked right past us to the sample counter. We sat two feet away from them and giggled while they got their samples and chatted. We could hear our grandma mention us in saying how much the grandchildren would love the pizza bread that they have there. She purchased the bread and we left the store sprinting back to the car and into the trunk. Again we could hear the car door unlock button 15 times before they entered the vehicle. We drove about 5 minutes and were half way around lake harriet when my grandma noticed some movement in the trunk. Akil must have been re situating himself. She screamed for my grandpa to stop the car and when he did she jumped out the door and yelled from outside of the car “theres someone back in the trunk!” my grandpa as brave as he is, kept his composure and yelled back at us “alright whos back there!” akil and I started laughing and came out of the trunk revealing our hiding spot. We told our grandma sorry for startling her and she got back in the car and we all laughed together for the rest of the ride home as we told them the story.
the bird sanctuary I was on my way to meet up with a friend and I decided to cut through the bird sanctuary. It was late spring and I was on my bike. The woodsy dirt path probably wasn’t as practical as taking the bike path but the scenery made it worth while. Everything was just starting to bud and the leaves were beginning to show on the trees. The ground was damp and would leave a trail from my bike tires in the mud as I traveled through. It was white from the cotton seeds being dropped from the cotton wood trees that stood tall all through out the sanctuary. It looked like snow on the ground because the white fluffy seeds lay so full and dense on the woods floor. It was a beautiful scene. I decided to make a stop at a stone bench that was next to the path. I sat down and brought out my pack of cigarettes lighting one and absorbing my awe striking surroundings. The crisp spring air made the cigarette all the more satisfying as I inhaled the toxins to my lungs. I could hear the birds sing their songs in the trees all around me. I loved being around all of the undisturbed nature and its peacefulness. Such a peaceful place in the middle of the city seemed so rare in this day and age. I held my cigarette in my right hand and would take drags slowly as to make sure I could get the most out of my time on the stone bench. I stared at the ground as I smoked and admired the white cotton wood seeds that carpeted the forest. I patted my hand over the ground feeling how soft and fluffy the seeds were. I took a drag from my cigarette. I couldn’t help but notice how flammable the cotton wood seeds must be. I took another drag from my cigarette. i day dreamed about how delicate these woods really were. My cigarette was almost gone and I was about to finish my time I had spent in the beautiful bird sanctuary in a moment or so. I looked up and down the path to see if there were any people near by. Nobody was around. It was so peaceful. I took my last drag from my cigarette and flicked it into the sea of white seeds, not really considering the consequences that would follow. I just wanted to see something interesting happen. The lit cigarette landed in the middle of the path on top of the cotton wood seeds and their seemed to be a brief moment of silence throughout the forest before they lit aflame. The fire started small and then quickly arose to waist high. It spread in a circle moving outward toward the rest of the forest. I could see the flame getting out of hand so I ran to where the cigarette landed and attempted to stomp it out. The fire was spreading too quickly though and had made its way off the path and into the woods. Oh shit, I thought. I made one last attempt to put the flame out but was unsuccessful seeing as the cottonwood seeds were everywhere and very flammable apparently. I hopped on my bike and fled the scene looking back only once, seeing the bright orange flame spreading throughout the forest. Whoops.
