Love's No Crime Chap. 1
I speeded through the dark tunnel just below the old railway. It is specially made for the city's freight trains carrying mails all around the entire state, but is rarely even passed by. If I will have to guess about how seldom it is to hear the trains passing by this rail, I'll rather just say that you can count them on your fingers if you've been living here for 7 years. This comes with a few other reasons why this part of the city is extremely quiet and is famously labeled as the suite of all the darkness in Eastsun City.
I can't blame them. The government knows that the deepest nook of the Samyon Mountain is where the most wanted criminals are hiding. They've already tried hard enough to find us. But even if the mountain turns flat, they will never find out where we are. And they do not know much yet about our habitat neither.
We have totems, strong ones that help us from getting away of our dirty doings. Mine's my blue diamond necklace that turns gray under the full moon. My mother gave me this before she passed away...
... I lied, actually, it's not. This necklace is just the first thing I stole from my neighbors when I was only 15. I started so young to perfect my profession. A girl who almost grew up with no parents and just an adopted orphan by an average family. It'll totally be a big pain for them to find out what kind of devil I turned out to be. Yet, eventhough I know I've let them down, I hope they'll be able to understand me someday. Because I do not show so much my interior than that of what the others could see.
But that was the past. It comes, it happens, and it's gone. What's more important now is the present and the possibly bright future for me, of course.
I turned my headlight brighter as I saw the sharp curve sign, reduced speed and turned my motorcycle right carefully. Hey, I have to follow some rules too, I don't want to die early. I have alot of dreams to accomplish, and a whole lot of things to steal and make money with. This woman's ain't giving up until I put a check mark on every single thing listed on my bucket list. And besides, I'm not dying unless the whole world already knows the name Red Li, the most infamous criminal in all criminal history.
Probably you might be thinking, why did I chose to live this way. My answer will be just like what would any other "lady" outlaws would say. To be rich and be generally recognized.
But here's a fun fact, female bad guys aren't too unconventional in this place.
You'll meet at least one of us everyday. But of course you have no idea about our true identity. Under these deceiving butterfly wings lives the pests you'll never want to discover.
After a long highway ride, I finally saw the Quarters getting nearer. That cold steel roof is quite distinctive from afar. Makes me wonder how could the said crime fighters here still couldn't find us. I always say this city is in desperate need of better military and security. But not well enough to bring my own army down.
I parked my motorbike just next to the brick pavements. Then I turned to the#moonbehind me with the tinted helmet still on my head.
"Hey, thanks for another safe ride." I whispered as my breath fogged the glass.
Do you ever get the feeling of finding yourself lost in the sight of the moon? It's just so remarkably pleasant and wonderful. And very queer in my opinion. A person like me, shouldn't feel this lighthearted since I have the world hating over me. But I couldn't help it. I like it. And if I like something, I don't let it go.
"I have no idea you're into stargazing now, Ms. Li"
That voice came from behind me and belongs to the only one person left to accept me as a sister-like compatriot. So I turned around to see a cheeky grin on her face. I scoffed and removed the helmet on my head.
"You know what. I loathe this constant behavior of yours that's accusing me of wrong concerns about myself."
I could hear her tiny chuckle as I locked my beloved vehicle, my decade-old motorbike that is.
"Oh right. Nobody knew anything about you and your concerns more than you do."
"What? Says who?"
"Says you."
"Wrong, darling. I didn't say anything like that." I gave her a warm hug and she hugged me back. "You see, I know people who knew about me and my concerns more than I do."
"Who?" I looked at her young confused face and smiled at the corner of my lips before walking past her to enter the Quarters.
"The guys who play with sirens and the corrupted souls
dressed in tuxedos."
"Oh-kay. Is that a riddle?"
She has so much yet to learn...
She's just like me when I started out...
"Ask yourself. Maybe it's riddle. Or maybe you're just missing the point of it."
And she took a big loud scowl. Surprisingly, on the other side, I thought she would get it. My first impression on her is that she was pretty intelligent.
"I don't understand what you're saying, Ms. Li."
We began to enter the big glass doors of the Quarters. Bright lights are everywhere, the clear glass walls, the white floor tiles of which I could hear my heels clicking as I walk.
"At first I really thought you're smart, Maggy."
I could see her pudgy face turn into the hue of my favorite hot pink dress. Darling, how many times do I have to tell you not to show your weakness to anyone.
"Well, maybe not all times, Mam."
I sighed. And didn't I also tell her I do not like being treated as a superior.
"Here, just take my backpack and put it in my room. I'm going to the lounge to see what's in there."
Maggy immediately hopped on her toes on the way to my room. I can't help but smile on her slaphappiness. She's too mature yet too naive sometimes. It's too bad she chose the wrong path of #life being my protege. She could definitely do better.
