Scars (Chapter One)
"No, Jenna, please don't," I begged as tears flowed freely from my brown eyes.
"I'm sorry!" my best friend sobbed. "I just can take it anymore." I felt myself tearing apart as she took a step back off of the sidewalk and the oncoming SUV hit her head on, her body flailing #lifelessly. I tried to reach out. To do something. But she was already gone.
I began spun around, running, forcing myself to believe it wasn't true. I ran for what seemed like hours. Tears coated my face and I knew that my makeup was long-gone. I didn't even care about the makeup, though. I just knew that I had to get that last image of Jenna out of my head. To tell myself it was a dream. I ran until I came across my house where I got to the front door, then collapsed in a fit of tears and screams on my front porch steps.
I shot up, tear streaks staining my face from the nightmare that was reality. I still ached from last year. The year that my best friend committed suicide in front of me.
I fell back onto my tear stained pillow and let the dry sobs rack my body. I could have saved her. If I hadn't run, I could've saved her. She could have lived. It was all my fault.
"Emilie?" my mom called from my doorway. "Are you okay?" she asked.
"Just go away," I mumbled halfheartedly.
"School bus comes in an hour," she reminded me. I heard her footsteps as she walked down the hall to wake up the monster otherwise known as my brother, John.
I sighed and sat up, wiping the tears. I didn't do anything to save her, so I didn't have an excuse to cry. The doctors said it. She died in the hospital. Maybe, just maybe, if I'd called them sooner....
I quickly shook my head and stood up. It's too late to change the past, I scolded myself as i peeled the sheets off of my sweat-covered body and stood up. I grabbed the usual fashion; dark-wash jeans, a dark sweatshirt-this one displaying one of my favorite singers, Ed Sheeran, and my old beat-up Converse hi-tops. I left my hair down, naturally straight.
"Yo, retard," my brother yelled gruffly at me from outside my door. "Be ready in five minutes or you can walk the two miles to school!" Yeah. My mom forced him to drive me. Three months until my permit. Just another reminder that by now, Jenna would be driving me to school.
Time for another day in my own, personal hell. Problem is, I deserved it.
