Punishment A door slams shut. It echoes through the hallway, Resounding in the raindrops that fall On galvanized roofs. It is the sound of stifled emotion Upon crushed hope and white rage. Love smiles smugly, oblivious To the sour revenge sworn repeatedly Through clenched teeth. Reddened eyes Spill the hot, scalding rain. Then comes the bitter calm, When Pride sulks sullenly, seething, And it is raw defiance that will stamp Out the door, undefeated, Stronger than before.
