Smile Once, on my way home from classes, I passed a man I can't recall ever having met. As he walked by me, he looked me in the eye and said "Cheer up!", then continued on his way without ever looking back to see my reaction. Eventually his words had what I assume was the intended effect and I had a "Faith in humanity restored" moment. But later I had to stop and really think about what had just happened, because my initial reaction was not to smile. Just how jaded does a person have to be for the first thought they have after receiving a random act of kindness to be "Why did they even bother?"
