Thirteen In The Dark: Part 6 I think this is the end for me. There is no way I could survive a three to four meter drop to the solid ground. That is it. I am just going to give up, I can't go back from here. My distraught melts into comfort as warm fingertips catch my weight. Relief streams through the slowly pumping blood in my veins. As I am stood up I take a last look at the building. "Is that a door?" What did we even craft that rope for? Was all of that for nothing? "Do you mean we could've just taken the stairs down here?" A tall boy with light hair complains. I comprehend that if we had taken the stairs we were more likely to have been caught. "No. It would've been dangerous." I argue. The rusting steel door reveals the man who must have cut the rope. "It's a machant..." I frost with anger. I am happy he let me go, but why? Most 'machants' would hurt you on the spot. "What's a machant?" My unit questions me. I peel my pointer finger off of my clenched fist and fix the destination of my finger to my so called brother. "That is what they are called." The door slams shut behind him, indicating no one is following him. I don't trust him. What if he is tricking me? This is not the time to be billable and lured into a trap. "Prove to me you are my brother." I shriek while fast-walking towards him. He looks around seventeen or eighteen. The same age as my real brother... "My name is Lucas. The shock overwhelms me and I realize it is my brother. His name was Lucas, but I cannot remember my sisters name, or mine. Brainwashed. Taken pills to forget our past. "What is my sisters name?" I choke up. I do not know the answer, but I ask for comfort. "Her name was Lark." A songbird... Meadowlark. I had heard one of them before, and I think my parents must have liked them to give my sister that name. I am hesitant to ask.... But it is for the best. "Will you help us?" I conclude. He glances into all of our faces, and nods in return. He is risking his #life so save us, to get out of here. "I should go receive your sister." My eyes open as wide as my lids are able to stretch themselves. This may be e best day of my entire #life; I escape with my whole unit, and in return get to reunite with my siblings. Lucas returns into the musty building leaving a grin on my face. "We will wait in this ditch," I order. We cannot be seen by the evil ones, or machants I should say. Not while we have gotten out. The ditch is only a couple meters away. Close enough for Lucas and Lark to find us, but far down enough we will not be seen by machants. "Where's Harry?" I whisper. I frantically jerk my head from side to side until I spot him on the other side of the furrowed trench. I duck as I scramble to his place, where he is spying for my siblings. "How could you trust them?" He backs off. "That is my brother. He is helping us." I argue. He does not agree with me for some reason and faces the opposite direction from me. He's scared, he must just me saying that. "He looks like me... He even has the same name as my brother! It must be him.." I reason and anchor my scraped hands to his arms. Out of no where Harry slips out of my grip. His furled green eyes lace with my soft glare. Harry lifts his left hand strikes my sunburnt face with abundant strength and anger. "He is one of them! He could be anyone!" He rages into my ears. Tears flush my eyes and I stand there in astonishment that my best friend has neglected me. I have just been abused. I was slapped by the person most dear to me, whom I have entrusted deeply. Without a word and a stinging mark across my face, I make my way to the end of the ditch.
