Innocence Innocence left early And held the door as she went. White countenance fixed onward, Her time with us was spent. Liberation at last! My companions rejoiced. Long they awaited her departure Though it was not my choice. We were regularly acquainted, As much as society would allow - Her soft virtue was luminous Yet dimmed amongst the crowd. I once relished halcyon youth Held by her fragile embrace, The pearly depths of her eyes, And purity of her porcelain face. She was with us that night As the room spun with rebellion, Then suddenly she was gone - My sweet Innocence never to be found again (This is an edited version of "Innocence" that I entered in a contest recently.
