The point is, the older brother (Johnny) won't let anything like that happen to pony boy. Page 120 paragraph 1, When Johnny was in the hospital all the greasers came to see if he was ok. They were taking care of him and helping him put grease in his hair like a true friends would do. In the end Johnny may have lost his scholarship to college but he gained in love for and from his family could not have been learned in college.
