Broken Siberia - Chapter One Janice looked down at her broken leg and laughed. There was no way she was going to make it for the exam in time any more. At least she had a good excuse. It was 1983. Nearly 30 years has passed since then. She was lying down with a broken leg again. There was no laugh this time. She couldn’t believe that in this difficult moment it was the first thing she remembered. She wasn’t sure if remembering the comfort of breaking a leg on a summer morning in Manchester was supposed to help her in anyway now in this ridiculous situation she thought she found herself right now. Shivers went through her body as she tried to adjust in the snow. Siberia during February was pretty cold with temperatures dropping down to minus 40 at nights and with heavy snowfall and strong blizzards. Janice loved money and this was the only thing she could think of in this moment as well. ‘I’m here for the money. I’ll be OK. Someone will find me soon.’ She said to herself. She pulled her hat down to cover the ears better. It was a nice, cotton winter cap she got from Selfridges. Her ears didn’t care much for were it came from though – they were cold, quickly turning red. A car passed by. She saw it. She even tried to scream. The driver could barely see anything on the road and didn’t seem to pay much attention anyway. He was late for an appointment with his lady friend and couldn’t lose any more time. His wife is a jealous woman and doesn’t like when his late. He didn’t want to get into trouble, so needed to be quick. And quick he usually was. Janice started to lose the feel in the broken leg. She wasn’t sure if it was due to the freezing temperatures or because it was broken. She hoped for the latter one. A thought of losing a leg quickly went through her mind. Pictures of children who lost their legs on mines in Africa appeared in her head. She thought: ‘They live through it, so will I!’. ‘Maybe BBC Breakfast will show me in their programme?’ she gently smiled to herself as another car quickly passed her. She only noticed it when it was too late.
