Caroline And I-Chapter 1 Here I was again, sitting here in deep thought about something completely useless. It doesn't matter. It shouldn't matter. Even as I repeat this, I know it does matter. Everything that happened, it was all my fault. A soft knock made me turn away from my window. I looked towards my dark, polished, wooden door and saw Caroline standing in the doorway. "Brother, it is time for dinner." She announced. I nodded and stood up. Straightening out my clothes, I walked over to her and placed a kiss on her forehead. "To the dining room then." I offered my arm which she took. "What were you thinking about?" She questioned turning her head slightly to look at me. By the tone of her voice, I could tell she had a clue. "Everything." Her brows creased as a frown formed upon her face. "What is that specifically?" "Pretty ladies like you shouldn't frown like that. It will cause wrinkles." I changed the subject wishing for her to drop it. She seemed to realize that I didn't want to speak about it and just smiled. Soon we reached the dining room. The table was one of those long dining tables decorated with silver and gold. I immediately noticed that there was an extra plate with silverware on the left side of the table, next to my chair. As we sat down, I wondered why it was there. I didn't plan on having guest today or all this week. "Sister, why is there an extra plate?" I inquired. "I invited someone." She stated simply. I frowned slightly. "Who?" "Handsome men like you shouldn't frown like that. It will cause wrinkles." She smiled sweetly. I laughed. "Good point." The butler of the manor entered the dining room and next to him was a man who looked to be in his late twenties or early thirties. "Pardon my intrusion but the guest has arrived." He pulled out his chair. The man sat muttering a swift thank you. The butler bowed before clapping his hands to represent that the meal will now begin. Three maids came out of the kitchen, two pushing the cart and the other one to pass out the food. They bowed and served. I inspected the guy closely. He fidgeted under my gaze. "Stop it." I smirked and turned my attention to my sister. "Stop what?" She narrowed her eyes at me and I smiled. Once the maids were done serving and had left, we began eating. I ate quietly, blocking out the conversation between the two. My mind was somewhere else entirely. Well, it was until Caroline kicked my leg under the table. I glared at her. She glared back. "I would appreciate it if you would take part in this conversation." I sighed heavily. "I don't want to." "Speak." She demanded. I turned my steely gray eyes to the his bright blue ones. I saw a small shiver go down his spine. "What is your name?" Caroline rolled her eyes. "Should have been paying attention." I gave a hard stare to my sister. "Just saying." They continued to talk as I observed quietly. Sooner or later, we finished dinner and moved into a different setting. The living room. The living room is where all of my books that I wrote are placed. He walked over and picked one off of the shelf. "I've read these books before. This is my favorite author." "Really now?" "Yes." I nodded. "This book is my favorite." I looked at it and smiled slightly. It was one of my recent books. "The characters are so different from his other books." "They are based off of real people." I shrugged. He stared at me for a moment. "You wrote this?" I nodded. "Yes. I wrote all of them, though they are not under my name." He blinked in disbelief. "You did?" "Yes I did." "Wow. That is amazing." "It is?" "Of course!" "Well I think it is time for bed. Nicholas you will be staying in one of the guest rooms." Caroline said standing up. He nodded. My head snapped in her direction when she said that. I narrowed my eyes at her. Caroline called for a butler to show Nicholas to his room. Once they were gone, I growled at her. "Why is he staying?" "Because I promised him that he could stay for a while." "How long is a while exactly?" I noticed her begin to avoid my eyes. "A year." She said quietly. "A YEAR?!" She nodded biting her lip. She knew I was angry. I pinched the bridge of my nose to calm down. "We will discuss this tomorrow." I turned and headed to my room. Upon entering I stripped to my boxers and climbed into bed. Soon I was out like a light.
