The Saddest Thing Despite all of the horrors of the world, I feel at my saddest when I see an old person on the tube or bus wearing shoes but no socks. I can't explain why this makes me so sad. They seem happy.

Fat Kids Letting your kids get morbidly obese is child abuse. If a child turned up to class so thin that they were sick, social services would be contacted. The child would cared for and nursed back to health. Children that are so fat that they are classed as morbidly obese are at serious health risks in both the short and long term. They require just as much care as malnourished children, and yet there seems to exist more hesitation in alerting social services.

Overwhelmingly true. I think society has constructed a lack of sympathy for the obese, because they are "greedy", "self-induldgent" etc. It's corrupt, when you really think about it!

As parents it's up to us to teach our children. My philosophy is if I don't fill my cupboards with crap food, they can't eat it!

Where's The Value I once asked a philosophy professor, 'Can you give me one clear cut example of what differentiates humans from other animals?' She replied 'The ability to reflect on poetry.' 'Fair enough' I said. The value of writing seems to be obvious. Dickens, Keats, Twain, Shakespeare... Many of the most celebrated figures from history achieved their place in our hearts by communicating beautiful words. So here's the puzzle: why, if the value of writing is so self-evident, are degrees that include mostly writing skills regarded as 'valueless', or 'indulgent'? I suppose because they don't really contribute anything to the economy, right? As a philosophy undergrad, I can tell you the difference between an 'a priori' and an 'a posteriori' proof, but that's hardly going to put bread on the table. So, is the government justified in placing a priority on degrees like engineering and the sciences?

No they are not. Not ever and in no way. We are all products of our culture. Science, art, philosophy, sport, etc all have an equal place in our lives. Without this diversity of learning and expertise, we are facing a very bleak future.

We need to go back to having professional philosophers in public places to push the rest of us into thinking more. I love engaging in deep discussions. When the government talk about scientists, they don't know what they mean. Scientists need philosophy as much as the country needs science. Science IS based in philosophical processes. 'The Birth of a New Physics' by I Bernard Cohen should be a standard text on every science course.

Interesting debate. I think we should have some kind of credit system to encourage students to study hard, I.e 5GCSEs A*-C means you earn enought credits for 3 A Levels, each A Level earns you 1 year of a degree. A passed degree earns you credits for a masters, etc. people can use there credits when they need to as life changes and if they've not got enough credits then they'll need a student loan to pay to do a course privately. If this was the case 1.students would be encouraged to pay (everyone prefers something for free than debt), 2. It would allow people that don't know yet what they want to do to get life experience and decide or maybe they want to party or travel for a bit before studying.

Motivations Do you write for yourself, or for your audience? Would you still write if there was nobody there to read?

Both. But as very few people have actually read my writing and some of it I wouldn't want to share anyway. So maybe it doesn't really matter?!

Ooo this is a good question. I write for myself as I enjoy the experience, however, I love the idea one day it will be read for others and enjoyed by an audience.
