THE CHECK-OUT LADY Part I Harriet was her name and you'd never guess her game. Oh no, by first sight her 'game' would astound you. Ruby red lips stood upon her pale skin. Not a blemish in sight. Her green eyes could have you in a trance. The light would hit her long, black hair in such a way that made it shimmer a shade of blue. However she parted her hair it fell perfectly. An effortless beauty. Flawless. What was her game you ask? She woke up on a painfully bright Tuesday morning. Harriet dragged herself to the edge of her bed and unsteadily stood herself up. She wore nothing but a pair of violet, frilly knickers and a oversized, slouchy t-shirt. Even still, she was a picture. She plodded over to her uniform lay neatly on her buffet, her eyes barely open. She stared herself in the mirror and let out a long sigh. Harriet could never see her beauty. She barely made an effort with her appearance, not that she needed to. She may occasionally apply a stroke of mascara if any. But most days she would leave her face an empty canvas and scrape her hair into a high pony tail, as she did today. As soon as she was ready, she took one last look in the mirror and examined herself head to toe. She put on her name badge with a posed pride, and then slouched again. She talked to her mirror-self with her eyes as if to say, "What are you doing?". She picked up her bag and headed out of the door. When she arrived at work she headed into the staff room, getting a few dagger-stares from other staff. Ignoring them, she gulped down her embarrassment and continued on to the punch-in. She did the daily punch-in and headed on her way to her old pal check-out number 5. That's right.
