Selflessness Vs. Pride "Our selflessness is a foot away from our pride..." -eph the melancholic poet What does this mean? First, let us define selflessness. "Selflessness" is when you think of other people before thinking for yourselves. It is when you think of the interest or benefits of other people before thinking for what may benefit you. In other words, selflessness is the quality of unselfish concern for the welfare of others. Now, let us take a look on the word pride. "Pride" is an excessively high opinion on one-selves. An excessive self-esteem or being over confident because of the things you have achieved. Pride may lead you to the state of being arrogant because of the belief that you are much better, smarter or more important than other people. Pride is when you think that you are more superior than other people. In other words, pride is the quality of having too much concern for yourself because you believe that you are much better than other people. I mentioned a while ago that the distance of our selflessness is just a foot away from our pride. How? This is the distance between our heart and our brain. Being unselfish and having too much pride on yourself makes the two parts of our human body to function well. When we are on the state of having selflessness, our heart is at work here on this area and when we are on the state of being proud, our brain is functioning more on this matter. The best example of selflessness and pride is to be seen in the #life of the "Pharisees" and in the #life of "Jesus Christ". The pharisees knew the Law, they are so-called "the experts" on TORAH. They are scholars but they do not know it by heart thats why they became hypocrites. They don't practice what they preach instead they use the law to criticize and place people into shame. Pharisees became proud of themselves because of their achievements, position on the society and because of what they know but they have forgotten how important is the role of the heart in their lives. Jesus is the Messiah, He is the Son of God and yet He became a man just to be the light of the sinners. He did not despise the sinners but rather He showed compassion. He became a man, left His divinity to understand the pains of human beings. He was scorned, tortured and crucified in order to redeem what was lost when sin entered the world. He conquered death so that sinners like you and me may live in eternity with God. Jesus showed that brain and heart must work together and the result is humility and selflessness. Let us learn to use our brain and heart wisely just like what Jesus taught us through His examples. As a believer, our ultimate goal is Christlikeness.
