What We Have Race. Racism. Discrimination. Even after all these years that have passed with people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and countless of others who have fought to destroy it, racism is still among us. Maybe even stronger than ever. How can I be so sure of this? I see and feel it every time I am with the man I love. I am Hispanic. He is Caucasian. I am fairly dark skinned. He is light skinned. When we hold hands one can confuse our joined hands for an Oreo cookie. When we walk the streets, hand in hand, everyone looks. At first I thought it was because of the age difference, but the hate I sensed from these people and their glares went much deeper than age. When I talked to him about it he said one word; race. Then it all clicked. People don't like mixed couples. Everyone feels like they should enclose themselves only to their race. Only date people like them. Limit their love.. Can you believe that? Limiting their love just so that they won't be stared at like they don't belong. I never look at things in that manner. I don't see race between us. I see love. I don't see oddness. I see togetherness. I don't see hate. I see happiness. I love this man with all that I have inside of me. I once told him, "I love you with a love that love itself couldn't understand" and I meant it. Everyone can stop and stare. Everyone can call it taboo. Everyone can think that we are going to hell. Everyone can be racist against us. But I know, deep in my heart and soul what we have is love. What we have is real. No amount of race or racism will ever change that.
