Yellow light seeped into my eyes as I slowly rose from the far corners of my mind. Thought flashed across my minds eye, and I gasped with shock. I sat up suddenly, my eyes where blinded from the light. Claws gripped my arm, and distorted snarling sent chills up my back. Hot breath came over me, and fangs glinted in the moons eerie glow. I tried to pull free, but more strong grips took hold of me. "Sara!" Fear coursed through me, and I tried to scream. My body was pulled into a comforting embrace. Arms wrapped around me, and someone rested their chin gently on my head. "It's okay Sara, I'm here." I blinked as my eyes adjusted to the yellow light. Sticky tears ran down my face, and I brought up my wrist to wipe them away. "Where am I?" My voice was a small croak, and I wondered if whoever was comforting me even understood it. I looked around the room I was in. From what I could see, I was in a hospital room. The room was fairly plain, except from a few things. Their was a worn out recliner in the left corner, and a small television mounted on the wall. A counter with a sink was built into the wall on the left. I couldn't see past the body of my companion. Speaking of my companion, he had hesitated with his answer. "AutumnBridge hospital, you've been asleep for eleven days..." The arms released me, and I looked up to see who had waited for me to wake. I was a bit surprised to see Seth, my best friend's father. Seth gave me a warm smile, his deep blue eyes full of pity. A flash of memories ran through my head. There was an image of my best friend, his green eyes wide with fear. Then a picture of a monstrous, dark creature appeared. The beast began stalking toward me, it's claws dimly reflecting the#moonlight. A low snarl rose from it. "Sara?" I was gently shaken, my mind coming back to the present. My eyes had drifted to my lap. I had been staring at my hands, my fingers where locked together. The soft fabric of my sweatpants cushioned my hands. Immediately I looked up to Seth. "Where's Donavan?" Seth's eyes widened with shock, then softened to a mix of sorrow and pity. His hand slipped of my shoulder, and he stood up. The bed suddenly felt very cold and empty without his presence. A soft sigh escaped Seth, and he ran a hand through his nearly white hair. "He refuses to come see you..." My mouth opened slightly to express how stunned I was. "I can take you to him, he hasn't left the waiting room." I nodded and slid out of the bed. The room spun a bit as my weight was shifted to my feet. Seth gently grabbed my shoulder as I adjusted to the shift. Once I got use to the change I shuffled to the door. My old sneakers where neatly placed at the door. I didn't have any socks on, but I put on my shoes anyway. Seth opened the door for me, and we entered the hall. Since I didn't know where to go, I followed Seth down the hall. We passed the main desk for whatever floor we where on. No one was at the desk, and most of the lights where off. I began to wonder what time it was. Every other light in the hall was off, so it must be late. The white walls seemed long and dull. There where a few pictures on the walls, but they where mainly nature based. Seth stopped at an opening in the hall. He was looking to the right, and I walked around him to see what had made him stop. This room was spacey, and had large windows on the walls that overlooked the city. There where padded benches along the window on the right wall. A few cushioned chairs had been placed at a small table in the corner. On one of those chair, sat a very familiar person. Wide, green eyes watched me intently. "Donny." I started to walk toward him. Donavan had been resting his head on the table, and maybe sleeping. He was now wide awake. Dark circles showed all the restless nights he had spent here. "Stop!" Donavan yelped, as he brought he knees up to his chest. He hugged his legs and hid his face behind the self made barrier. "Go away!" My feet froze to the tile floor. Hurt twisted in me. After everything that happened, I didn't hold anything to him. Yet Donavan held everything against himself by the looks of it. He clearly hadn't left the hospital since the incident. His raven hair was covered with a plain, faded, black baseball cap. He even had on the same clothes from that day. This meant worn out, black jeans, and a grey tee with some sort of purple headphones printed on it. The shirt had old blood stains on them. I'm not mad Donavan." Green eyes peaked over his knees at me. "Just go away..." He looked away from me, which hid his face. "I can't believe you..." His voice was barely a mumble, but the room was quiet enough to hear him. My hand came up and I hooked a finger on the collar of my white shirt. I felt my heart fluttered in my chest as the memories burned my mind. "It was an accident, what matters is that you failed." Since I am still alive, Donavan must have totally bombed on his attack. He wasn't thinking straight, and he can't help being what he is. "But I tried!" Donavan got up suddenly from his spot on the chair. He forced the chair aside, and took a few steps toward me before hesitating to a stop. His eyes drifted to the floor, as he became nervous again. A shaky breath escaped him, and he wrapped his right arm around his torso. He winced slightly from the action. I looked over to my left, and noticed that Seth had walked away. I could see him at the far end of the hall. The light near him was flickering as it slowly died. He seemed to be on the phone. My attention turned back to Donavan. Donny was more of a mess than I was. "Are you okay Donavan?" It was wrong to say I got the worst of all this until I knew his true condition. My answer was silent, as Donavan lifted the bottom of his shirt up the reveal a line of stitches across his torso. There were to many to count. I covered my mouth with my hands. The stitching closed a wound that was probably seven to eight inches long. I was surprised that the wound hadn't been covered. He let his shirt hide the wound. I would never get the image out of my head though. "Your scars are probably worst..." Donavan said as he shoved his hands in his pockets. "So the real question is, are you okay?" "I've been asleep this whole time. I have no memory of my early healing process. While you where awake for the whole thing... You didn't deserve that at all." My hands overlapped on the center of my chest, and I looked at Donavan. He frowned at my pity. "That's what happens when demons try to kill people. If anything, I was spared. Most demons are killed immediately. Sometimes they don't even save the soul. We were both extremely lucky." Donavan walked past me and over to the elevators behind me. He pressed one of the buttons on the panel and waited patiently. His eyes watched the red button so that he couldn't see my face. "I was waiting for you to wake up to tell you something." There was a ding as the elevator came one floor closer to us. "I don't think we should be friends anymore." Another ding, and the doors opened. Donavan walked in and the elevator doors closed. I stood there alone, without a friend. My best friend in the world had just left me. I stood their, my eyes fixated on the spot he had just been standing. The steady tick of a wall clock, and the hum of the elevator was all I could hear. Silence wrapped around me, and I let my tears slide silently down my face. Seth's rhythmic footsteps grew stronger as he approached me. "I left a voicemail for your parents. They'll be glad to know that your up. You probably can't wait to see them." He walked around to get a look at my face. After seeing my wet, red eyes, he checked the room. "What happen?" His tone was gentle, yet I could hear the worry. I brought a hand up to wipe my nose. "He doesn't trust himself around me anymore..." My eyes stung from the tears, and I rubbed them gently. The ground became blurry as I tried to sooth my eyes. Seth bit his lip and muttered, "Crap..." Then he looked over to the elevator. "Sara, I need you to stay here. Neither of you are suppose to leave the hospital." He left my side in an instant, and I barely looked up in time to see him run down the emergency fire escape. A familiar burst of my old stubbornness bloomed inside me. I don't really know why I am still in the hospital. Nothing seems to be wrong with me. Those final moments of the accident are a blur, so I don't know my injuries. I don't seem to have any injuries though. I walked over to the elevator button, and called the elevator. My eyes drifted from the red call button, to the screen above the doors that said what floor the elevator was at. The elevator was coming down from the top floor. "Where are you going?" I mumbled to myself as the elevator came to my floor. The stainless steel door opened with a ding, and I stepped in. My pale hand quickly slapped the seven button, and the doors rolled close. The elevator lurched and began to crawl up the shaft. Impatience began to eat through me and my foot tapped feverishly against the laminate floor. As I waited I began to wonder what could be up there that would interest Donavan. I highly doubt that his room was up here. If anything, he would be on my floor. "If I was troubled and scared why would I go to the top floor of a hospital?" My eyes widened suddenly as a lightbulb turned on in my mind. "Oh no." The elevator opened, and I nearly stumbled over my feet as I ran to the fire escape stairs. I nearly threw open the heavy white door, as I ran onto the grey metal landing. My footsteps echoed loudly as I ran up the stairs. Pain started to spread through my chest, but I didn't care. A white door loomed over me as I ran to it. A large sign said employees only, but I ignored it. I shoved open the door, and ran out onto the gravely roof. The rocks crunched loudly under my feet. "Donavan!" Cold air stung my throat as I ran over the roof. A wire caught my left foot, and I found myself falling face down to the rocks. I gasped as hot pain hit my chest, and the breath was knocked from me. My arms shook as I picked myself up off the gravel. Bits of rock stuck in my skin, and I could feel a few small cuts on my person. These few cuts weren't important. I needed to find Donavan as soon as possible. My legs felt unstable, but I broke into a run again. I squinted as the chilly air touched my eyes. Tears made my vision blur, but through the haze I could make out a figure. The person stood at the edge on the roof, his back to the sky. He was looking down at the rocks. "Donny!" I scream through the icy air. He looked up a me with glowing eyes. "Stop!" I held up his hand to signal me to stop my run. My feet stumbled to a stop sixteen feet from him. "Stay away from me." He tried to take a step back, forgetting that he was on the edge of a seven story building. Fear lit his eyes, and he gasped as gravity pulled on him. I ran forward and tried to take his hand. Our fingers where a mere few inches apart when he was pulled down rapidly. Unfortunately I had ran and couldn't stop in time. I tripped over the edge. My stomach flipped as gravity seemed to vanish, and I screamed. The wind rushed past my ears, and pulled at my clothing. "Sara!" My eyes locked with Donavan's. I was a few feet above him. The ground was coming fast. Donavan reached out his hands, and I quickly took them in mine. He pulled me into him, and wrapped his arms around me. I could hardly hear over the wind, but I know I hear something rip. Gravity was suddenly turned on, and the howl of the wind slowed down. I opened just in time to see the ground meet my feet. Donavan and I collapsed on the concrete ground behind the hospital. Pain spread through me as we tumbled on the floor. Donavan hit the dumpster a few feet from me, a solid thump coming from the metal. Black wings covered Donavan's limp form. Donavan shakily got to his hands and knees. I could barely move, my whole body was shaking. My shirt was warm and sticky, the smell of blood barely tickling my nose. I looked over to Donavan just in time to see him throw up a dozen different pills. He shook violently and leaned against the dumpster. "What where you thinking..." My voice was raspy from screaming. I looked from the pills to Donavan. Dull green eyes drifted over to me. "I was tired of being pitied." Donavan's voice was raspy too. "That's why I waited for you. I wanted you to be mad." He grabbed the rim of the dumpster, and shakily pulled himself up. His black, spotted wings sagged from his back. They where ruffled from the wind. I could see his legs shaking. I picked my head up off the floor, and got to my knees. "Why? What happened while I was asleep?" "You're bleeding!" Donavan tried to leave the support of the dumpster, but he nearly fell. "What happened?!" I demanded. My answer was silent for a long time. I narrowed my eyes at Donavan. He would have to tell me eventually. After a long silence, Donavan spoke. "Everyone that knew just pitied me. They kept saying it wasn't my fault, that it would be okay, that I couldn't stop it. At first I was relieved that everything was okay. But it wasn't okay. It was my fault, I probably could have prevented it." He looked down at the pile of pills. "I waited for you to wake up... You pitied me." Donavan pulled at his hair with his free hand. "I just don't get it! Why is every one like that?!" He squeezed his eyes shut. "I freakin swallowed your soul, and you didn't even hold it to me!!" I stared at my friend not knowing what to say. He was right of course, by the looks of it he was treated just like a victim. He was treated just like me. This made me wonder what would it be like to kill a person and be treated like the victim's kid who had watched. Who wouldn't go a little crazy after a while? Except Donavan wasn't crazy, he was seeing things clearer than everyone. "Donavan...?" My voice faded as I lost the words to say. He looked at me, and I could see a fire ignite in his eyes. "You're still doing it!" "Donavan!" Seth came around the corner. His eyes fell on both of us. I could see the gears in his head turning as he tried to take in the sight. While he did that, Donavan and I stared at him like deer in headlights. "You two gotta get inside before we get in trouble." Seth reached down for me, and carefully helped me up. His actions where slow as he picked me up bridal style. Then he addressed Donavan. "You can't stay here all night, we have to go in." Seth started to walk away, and I could barely see Donavan past Seth's shoulder. The wings on his back dissolved into smoke, and he tried to leave the support of the dumpster. It seemed a bit harsh for Seth to just turn his back on Donavan like that, but Donavan made it clear he didn't want to be helped. My friend stumbled and shuffled behind us. He would never admit it, but I could tell he was in pain. Those pills he had were probably prescribed to him after the stitches. The past eleven days he had been pocketing them. As soon as we entered the hospital door, late night staff seemed to crawl from the darkest corners of the hospital. Turns out, I had a skin graph on my chest, and that falling and running had severely irritated it. A few of the seems of it had broken. Donavan had torn our a few stitches, but the not to fix them. Since Donavan was healing well, they just wrapped some bandages around his torso. I had requested that we share a room, so they moved us to a bigger room. Moving had made Donavan a bit irritated with me, but I know he will get over it. Hopefully we could get past this. "Sara!" My eyes focused on donavan clothes.
