A bush chase My feet were sore and my legs were burnt; as we lagged along and my stomach churned. A howl echoed through the dusty planes; And it made me stop and pull the reins. The brumby let out a deafening roar; Just like a man would before a long war. And that was that we were of at a sprint; Hooves striking firelight as If they were flints. Another long howl rang through the outback; But we sped along that dusty old track. The source of the howls I could hear was behind us; But I daren't look back in fear. When a third howl boomed and shook the ground; I couldn't help but turn around. As my hair blew softly in the wind; My eyes widened and my stomach cringed. Behind us was nothing but shadows and scrub; A soft breeze playing a tune through a shrub. My imagination had got the better of me; And it all seemed to happen under an old gum tree. ©Maya_Francis-Green_2012
