Madelyn (Chapter One) The cold autumn air coiled around me like tin foil causing goosebumps to run up and down my soft, porcelain-colored skin. My dark brown ringlet-curls bounced as I walked. My big brown eyes matched my hair exactly. I stopped for a moment. I used my hands to smooth out my lavender dress with violet accents. When I finally reached the schoolhouse, I stepped inside. Most of the desks were already filled. I looked around the room. 'Just what I expected.' I thought to myself. There was only 4 girls counting me. Apparently, girls didn't need education. All the eyes in the room turned to me and widened. I also sort of knew they would all recognize me since my father is THE richest man in town. Most of the boys were wearing overalls with dirty, torn, shirts underneath. The three other girls were wearing sundresses. I awkwardly sat in an empty seat as the whole class watched. I sat next to a boy and a girl. The girl wore a bright yellow sundress and had tangled light-brown hair, which she had tied with a red ribbon. The boy had overalls that were dirty and worn. He was very thin and tall. He had brown hair and bright blue eyes. He had a certain look of sadness to him. As the day went on I listened, intrigued. At one point in the day, the girl sitting next to me whispered, "Aren't them rich kids supposed to have tutors er sumthin' ?" Obviously, she hadn't been paying attention to the grammar the teacher taught. I just shook my head. At the end of the day, everyone pushed and shoved to get out of the schoolhouse. The boys yelled and shoved violently, while the three girls whispered and giggled. I stayed put. "Why aren't you leaving?" The teacher, Miss Taylor asked. I stayed silent for a moment. "Do you have any of those books or #poems I could borrow?" I asked. She just laughed. "Why can't you buy one?" She managed to choke out between laughter. I slowly got up from my chair. I ran out.
