Off The Beaten Track As I step back on the beaten track I start another day, The fog steeps in, the darkness calls, again I lose my way. I feel the threat of beasts around who sense that I am weak, Their jaws clench tight they see no fight, so set upon the meek. With no attack am held up high, supported, shown the light, The moonlit shadows whisper down: "for no more will you fight. We'll be beside, support you in your battle day by day. We'll light your path, we'll be your aide, to help you find your way". Then suddenly appeared the most almighty flash of light, the jaws unclenched the beast let go, a sense of fight or flight. Frail and torn I stare out far onto the beaten track, Where is my aide, now who will help me find the right way back. Laying crumpled torn and tattered on the track I drift to sleep, A mere few hours, disturbed by prey, my rest is never deep. The momentary peace short lived, the new sun stings my eyes, I pray for motivation, not this premature demise. Empty, numb and motionless the silent tears befall, they trickle down the beaten track where the ragged beings call. Where abandoned lies a lone wolf dehydrated close to death, Drifting in an out of consciousness, and shallow is his breath. The stream of salty tears alights upon his fallen tongue, The river running through him that saves him from the sun. He gains the strength to hold his weight and go and find the source, he finds a broken spirit that's wandered way off course. A union of souls, entwined, set off to find their path, Scarred by beasts that tease or maim, obstruct or simply laugh. A new day starts to dawn on them, the destination clear, To aide the weak and fallen, to make their haven here.
