Lasting A sad smile crept over her lips. She shook her head and turned to the door, swallowing whatever words she had decided not to say. His heart ached. He wanted to stand, to cross the room and take her in his arms, to kiss her. He wanted tell her that he'd never let her go. But there he was, about to do just that. Her voice broke through the hum of the heater. With her eyes ahead of her, she said, "I'd tell you it was nice while it lasted. . ." She looked over at him and her ever so depressing smile returned. "But it didn't really last, did it?" She shook her head softly, and let the door shut behind her, the automatic lock clicking into place. He winced every time he heard her heels hit the stairs.
