One Dozen Roses
Part one
1692---Salem, Massachusetts
"Kill the witch! She will kill us all!" A random woman screeched. Margret Helprenze was tied to a wooden pole as rocks were stuffed into her pockets. "Please!" She cried, "I didn't do anything!" Now two soldiers were dragging her toward the river at the edge of town. "Please, don't do this! Mother! Father! Help!" Her parents stood in the crowd, mother weeping, and father starring but still on the verge of tears. Margret's eyes drifted to the bridge behind the mob. She saw the "witches" hanging #lifeless. She felt the cold water around her ankles, she began to scream.
"Wait!" She heard from the crowd. A boy came out, about her age. "Stop!" He said, "I will watch over her, if she kills me, you can kill her. But not until then." The soldiers, stopped and took Margret out of the water and handed her to the boy. He tied up her hands and took her to his small house. "My name is Daniel Farsworth." He said as they entered the house. He closed the door and untied her hands. "And I'm going to help you escape. I've met your parents and we shall go get food tonight before we leave. I have a two horses, we leave at midnight."
"Thank you, Daniel. I won't hurt you." Margret smiled.
"I don't believe in witches." He started to pack his bags.
"You should..."
At midnight that night, Daniel took Margret to see her parents. "My baby!" Her mother smiled through her waterfall of tears. "Stay safe my darling, we shall miss you very much." She stepped back to let the father hug their baby girl. H whispered something in her ear that made Margret's face turn grey. "I love you." He said.
"I love you too!" Margret said in a raspy voice. Daniel was looking out the window when he saw the soldiers approach his house.
"Time to go, Margret." He pulled her away from her parents and dragged her outside. Daniel threw Margret on his large black horse. Then he jumped onto the brown one in front. "He-ya!" He kicked his horse and they were off, into the forest. Later, once they had rode deep into the dark forest, they began to make camp.
The next morning Daniel and Margret were off again. "Where are we going?" Margret asked.
"There is a castle, broken down and abandon, you should be safe there."
"But when will we get there?"
"At the most, tomorrow, at least, two hours." Daniel kicked his horse and sprinted through the dark forest. Margret wished to know more, so she quickly tried to follow. A half an hour later, Margret had caught up to him. He was sitting on his horse, gazing over a small rope bridge. Some of the planks were missing and it swayed in the small breeze. He looked scared.
Daniel hopped off the horse and tied it to a tree, then motioned for Margret to do the same. "The horses can't go over this bridge, a witch has to. This will let me know if you a witch or not, maybe. Sometimes, you can't be sure." Margret stepped gingerly onto the bridge, she felt a sharp hot pain on her arm, but neglected to tell Daniel. When Margret was halfway across, Daniel started slowly moving toward her.
When both people were across, they started to walk again. Margret could see the castle on top of a cliff, but more forest lay in their path. Daniel looked confident enough to her, why should anything go wrong. The farther she stepped into the forest, the worse the burn became. Suddenly, Margret could hear voices, voices that sounded angry, voices telling her to go back. "Do you hear that?" She asked Daniel. He looked at her with a worried face,
"No." He said and continued walking.
One hour later they were walking on the rubble of the fallen castle. The burn was so great Margret couldn't walk. She told Daniel to go on while she rested. He happily marched into the castle. Margret sat on a large grey boulder and pulled up her sleeve. She saw burns up and down her arm. They spelled words, but she couldn't let Daniel hear her, so she kept to herself.
Inside the castle was walls on top of walls of paintings. Beautiful bookshelves filled with ancient scrolls and documents about witches. Illustrations of dark magic surrounded Margret and Daniel. No matter how much Daniel wanted to admire the fantastical art, Margret dragged him into one last room. Pillars of grey stone, pictures of witches and curses, and an unharmed glass ceiling. The floor in the center of the room had a large yellow circle with a star in the middle. Each of the five points led to a different symbol.
Margret lunged across the room amazed at the wonderous things. The second she stepped into the center of the star she fell limp and cold. Daniel rushed to her but an invisible force stopped him from entering the circle. Margret's sleeves rolled up her arms and allowed Daniel to see the words. "Witch." He gasped. Margret's skin cracked and turned grey, her brown hair turned black and her eyes rolled into her head. She slowly raised her arms and black creatures with skulls for faces formed out of each symbol on the star. The glass ceiling shattered and the pillars cracked and fell. The star that imprisoned the witches turned black.
Burt pieces of paper flew from the walls and made a wind tunnel around Margret. The creatures raised into the sky and plunged down at Daniel. He took out his sword and raised it above his head. Suddenly, before the monsters could reach him, he saw a white scroll flutter past him into the tornado of darkness. On the paper he managed to see the words kill and witch.
Daniel jumped into the dark tornado and fought for the scroll. The closer he got to the witch the louder he heard her curses. Daniel pushed through the tunnel and saw Margret. She was now screaming her words, and swaying her arms violently. The paper was below her feet and Daniel could almost reach it. Margret was facing away from him and he could barley see the words. "Witch! Witch! Go back to where you came from!" He read, "Go back to the fire of the underworld! Leave our peaceful home for the words of god, and all things holy, I send you down through earth! You shall not rule here, I will-" Margret began to shriek. She turned and lifted her hand toward his neck. A force was choking him and the burns in her flesh grew deeper with every word. She threw him back against one of the pillars and waited for the creatures to kill him. Daniel saw the dark wings then the skull, and the hideousness creatures were on him. Digging into his fleash with their talons. The spiked tails swung wildly in the air and Daniel could almost reach his sword.
When he jumped into the wind tunnel, he knocked over a vase of holy water and now his dagger lay in the puldle.water, where his sword now soaked. daniels fingers barley brushed the leather handle and slowly inched toward the main grip. As soon as he got his hand sturdily around it, he practically threw the sword at the creature on top of him. a when the sword struck the beasts body, it fell to the ground, but it wasnt a creature any more, it was a pile of ashes. now he knew how to defeat themdaniel wuickly got to his feet and started attacking more and more creatures. he could hear margret screaming inside her pile of as he threw the sword at the first beast. as the beast fell to the ground, but was no longer a creature, it was a pile of ashes. now he knew how to kill them. Quickly Daniel got to his feet and started killing the other creatures. Soon it was just him and the witch.
