Back To The Aints? We have an interesting dilemma in Louisiana. The NFL has unleashed never-before-seen penalties on the staff of the New Orleans Saints in light of the now infamous bounty scandal. However, what does an NFL team do without having its head coach for a year? It seems obvious that the NFL is having the same trouble the NCAA has been having: they wish to be taken seriously and seen as the law of the land, despite increasingly unpopular rules being put in place. But, the question is have they gone too far in their punishment of the Saints? Granted, Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis did lie and cover this issue up, but it is not as though the Saints defense was cheating, merely adding extra incentive to players to do what they are payed to do. Ethically speaking, this is nowhere near as heinous as the "Spygate" affair the Patriots were involved in, but perhaps, and I know this sounds ridiculously paranoid, the Patriots are viewed by the NFL as the team all others should be modeled after: clean cut and experienced winners. The Saints are not that. A rough existence until after Katrina, the Saints were a Cinderella story that no one expected to repeat. If the NFL wishes to punish the Saints, I can be okay with it, but I sincerely hope the NFL has looked into every other organization and will continue to do so, because otherwise this truly reeks of them simply attempting to make a statement rather than deal true justice. This ruling can severely damage a good team's prospects this season, and of done so frivolously, then they will deserve the harsh feedback they will ultimately get.
