The Gift I Would Give Heading home and I wasn't able to find a gift for her. I am familiar with the art of gift giving but not of trinket giving. And that's the way it has to be so it appears to be one of many others given to workplace acquaintances and teammates. It's the practice to hand over some little souvenir from the place where you've been. But I would like to have given more to her. The place where we were sent for a week is known for its jade, so I probably could have passed on some authentic stone and claimed it was something fiercely haggled for in the thrift markets like Silk Street or Wangfujing. And what exactly do I want to accomplish by doing that? I just think it can be something harmless -- I hand her a small and sincere token of my high regard for her and she falls into the convenient assumption that it has as much worth as the fobs I have handed off to everybody else. Well, I know nothing's going to come of that. But at least I would be able to express, in some fashion, my feelings for her.
